By virtue of a memorandum dated September 24, 2003, the Task Force for the Security of Critical Infrastructure (TFSCI) was created to be the operational arm of the Cabinet Oversight Committee on Internal Security (COC-IS) to coordinate and implement all government efforts in the protection of the country’s critical infrastructure.

Bitstop granted SPLA Status (Corp & Academic)

Known as the Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA), this program’s aim is to simplify the licensing agreement between service providers and Microsoft, enabling them to offer more flexible contracts to their customers and a number of additional benefits for both service providers and end users.

The SPLA provides third-party commercial use rights to service providers. As such, the service provider becomes the holder of Microsoft licenses. End customers receiving services deployed on Microsoft software products have no need to obtain their own Microsoft software licenses; they simply use the service provider’s SPLA licenses.

The SPLA enables service providers to license Microsoft products on a monthly basis, meaning they can offer ‘pay as you go’ services, Web services and hosted applications to their customers. In fact, it is the only licensing scheme that allows hosting and application service providers to rent Microsoft software to end users on a subscription basis.

Urgent Security Advisory for Bitstop Internet Users

We have documented several instances over the past week, where client computers have been compromised and used to attack our network. Forensics revealed the presence of the Sdbot-fam worm/trojan.

These users were running either WindowsXP or Windows 2000 (Most were unpatched) and most notably, Norton 2004 antivirus software. Norton AV was still unable to detect this virus, despite having the LIVEUPDATE activated. When infected, some units were unable to connect to anti-virus websites, and had the gt.exe and inetman.exe  surreptitiously installed. Internet browsing stalls when the infected system tries to infect other systems or contact its ‘master’.

In most instances, the default administrator password was blank. We used sophos to scan and detect the units. To help prevent the spread of this virus, please do ALL of the following:

  • 1. Patch your windows systems via the windowsupdate.microsoft.com website
  • 2. Upgrade your Antivirus software, and change your administrator password.
  • 3. Install a firewall, or activate the personal firewall that comes with Windows XP.
  • 4. Disable the uPNP and SSDP services from your unit.

You may also bring in your unit for inspection.
